Reality tv stars compete in half marathon
General > News

Have you ever wondered how reality tv stars might fare against one another in a real life athletic event? Several weight loss tv contestants participated in the recent San Diego Rock and Roll Half Marathon which helped raise funds for The Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. Karla Guy from Dance Your Ass Off ran along with Lance and Melissa from The Biggest Loser. The Dance Your Ass Off contestant completed the 13.1 miles first in 3 hours and 11 minutes, with Lance and Melissa coming in at 3:20. Considering that no one in the group is an experienced distance runner, and each has been struggling with weight loss, few would argue with the fact that these accomplishments are impressive.

Ryan Betz Race Report 3 ANN ARBOR

Thursday, 10 June 2010

Dexter-Ann Arbor Half Marathon is hosted by the Ann Arbor track club every year.

It wasn't my best race so far, I was feeling good in the morning but my legs did not feel great. The temperature was great but I wore two shirts thinking it would be cold. This made my run much more tiring as I warmed up during the race. There were about 6000 runners competing and a good amount of top runners.

The course was pretty hilly, but not to bad. For some reason or another, when I ran, I had to make a stop to go to the bathroom which cost me time. Though I will say I think this has been the most organized event I have done so far. I finished 526 overall in 1:44 which is slow for me and I am still sore from my bad run.

My next race is in Boston on June 26 which is one of the 13.1 series half marathons so looking forward to that.

Half the distance, twice the fun: Half-marathons taking off
General > News

It's been a long process to convince runners that racing 13.1 miles isn't actually half of anything. Perhaps it's that awkward name, half-marathon, which has somehow made the event seem less important.

But given the recent boom in half-marathon running, it's clear that more and more runners are targeting the distance, either as a stand-alone challenge or a stepping stone to a full marathon. According to a survey by running industry publication Race Results Weekly, participation in half-marathons in the United States grew by 15% last year, more than a third faster than the growth in all road running distances combined. Out of 200 well-established events surveyed, four of the top-10 in percentage growth were half-marathons, including the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Half-Marathon, which grew a whopping 132%, the most of any event in the survey.

"The half-marathon is a great distance to race in a build-up for a marathon," says New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith who finished her first marathon at last Sunday's Virgin London Marathon in a new national record of 2:25:21. "You can gauge where you are in your training and you can recover quickly afterward so it won't disrupt training."

Half marathon 'winner' used a stunt double
General > News

The winner of a women's half marathon in Shandong, China has been stripped of her title when she was discovered to have brought in someone else to run for her.

Liu Shuling was initially awarded victory in the race at the Yellow River Estuary International Marathon but video footage later revealed her to be Wang Xueqin, the People's Daily newspaper reported. Wang and Liu were both banned from the marathon for two years and will face further punishment from the Chinese Athletics Association.

This is not the first case of identity fraud at a Chinese long distance race this year. In January, more than 30 competitors at the Xiamen International Marathon had their results cancelled after they were discovered to have been carrying time-recording microchips for other high school students.

Chinese students get extra credits for the highly competitive college entrance exams with good performances at international sporting events.

General > News

Turbaned Tornado, 99, Fauja Singh became the world's oldest half marathon runner (subject to ratification) after completing the Inter Faith Luxembourg half marathon. Indian-born Fauja completed the 21-km race in 3.32 hours compared to his record of 2.29 hours five years back.

Speaking from Luxemburg, his coach Harmander Singh said, "He has become the first-ever man to complete a half marathon at the age of 99. He is excited and fully aware of his achievement. But at the same time he is disappointed because he was expecting better time."

Fauja, who belongs to Beas village in Jalandhar district, started running at the age of 89. Curious after seeing people run aimlessly for miles and miles on television, he sought to know what it was all about, and decided to give it a shot.

His first race was the 2000 Flora London Marathon where he ran a full marathon for Bliss, a charity for premature children. "Old man running for the youngest", said advertisements as Fauja completed the race in 6 hours 54 minutes.
