General - News

Turbaned Tornado, 99, Fauja Singh became the world's oldest half marathon runner (subject to ratification) after completing the Inter Faith Luxembourg half marathon. Indian-born Fauja completed the 21-km race in 3.32 hours compared to his record of 2.29 hours five years back.

Speaking from Luxemburg, his coach Harmander Singh said, "He has become the first-ever man to complete a half marathon at the age of 99. He is excited and fully aware of his achievement. But at the same time he is disappointed because he was expecting better time."

Fauja, who belongs to Beas village in Jalandhar district, started running at the age of 89. Curious after seeing people run aimlessly for miles and miles on television, he sought to know what it was all about, and decided to give it a shot.

His first race was the 2000 Flora London Marathon where he ran a full marathon for Bliss, a charity for premature children. "Old man running for the youngest", said advertisements as Fauja completed the race in 6 hours 54 minutes.
